OK, I don’t often make endorsements for contemporary films, but I saw what I think is a fantastic film the other night. Annie was working last Friday night at the barn (pottery barn). And I decided that I didn’t want to sit at home alone, so I went to the dollar theater. The selection came down to two movies, the new Indiana Jones movie and the only other movie which didn’t seem either blatantly offensive or for children, “The Visitor”. I figured Annie and I should watch the Indiana Jones movie together, so whatever I will watch The Visitor.
I think anyone who has ever struggled with recent movies that don’t seem to deliver on interesting characters and captivating plots would be very satisfied by this movie. As I got more and more into the film I kept thinking “please do not destroy this film with some cheesy predictable event, or some completely random and inappropriate scene” And it never happened!
Anyway, I wish movies like this were more frequently and easily accessible!
Now that I have recommended this film, I have to say there were a few dramatic expletives… and I think a young person would fall asleep in the first 10 minutes.
Let me know what you think…

Jake,
"Lives of others" is definitely worth a watch. I can only recall one "dodgy" scene, maybe my sensibilities aren't as sharp as yours. Can definitely recommend though.
While we're on German films, you really should watch "Goodbye Lenin!" and "Downfall" is excellent, but not as funny.
As I'm on a foreign-film roll here, I might as well continue with some of my other favourites:
Amelie
The Science of Sleep
Tell No One (the book is better)
Hero
Annie! Glad you found us! It's fun to catch up on everyone's lives via blogs.....I'll have to check up on yours all the time now!
I saw this movie with Deena last night. i liked it. You really feel for people who are struggling to make life work and risk everything to come to america, and face deportation and more trauma. i kept hoping that the mother would stay with Walter and then together they could maybe find some way to get Tarick back. i was still wanting something when this movie ended, and that is probably why it is so good.
i think immigration laws are a definite issue with our country. illegal aliens are a big burden to our welfare, health insurance, credit and identity theft issues. i have always felt that people who will come here and 'assimilate' learn the language, and respect the country and work hard should have the right to come here. the problem is we get plenty of the 'bums' of other societies! Tarick and his mother fit in to the first category and should be allowed to stay in my opinion. great movie Jake
