A Great Weekend!!

This last weekend Annie and I did something we have wanted to do for a long time. Stars aligned, ducks were in a row (I guess just one of us is a Duck officially). Anyway we went camping at Smith Rock State Park. We have heard a lot of good things about it and Annie committed us to go.
She has been aching to climb for.... three years. We bought me a harness about a year ago...that was a step in the right direction, but still it was just too hard to get it together for one reason or another.

Anyway we got a late start and arrived just as daylight had disappeared. Us and the other hippies all gathered at a communal "dining area." We wandered in the dark to find a place to pitch our tent. The stars were unbelievable. I went back to the car to get some water and found myself just gazing at the sky. The shadows from the starlight were truly softer than a lullaby (extra points to whomever can reference that one).
When we awoke I went off to .... explore and realized that we were very near the edge of this amazing canyon! And there was Smith Rock!! Gorgeous!
We awoke early and went off to stake out a climbing spot. We found a great spot where we by ourselves (at least initially). It was a lot of fun to climb! Annie was stoked to be back, and I was just loving the beauty of the place, and the shear Utahesqueness of it!! I was so thrilled to know that we have some "Canyon Country" near us.

So we both had a rather fulfilling day enjoying one another, the challenge of the climb and the beauty of this incredible place!!

Highly recommended!!

I really want to take Will rock climbing. I fear by the time he's old enough, I'll be too old!

Having said that, he's super strong - maybe I should take a leaf out of your book and just go!

So this applies to this and last post--I think you are crazy to strap yourself to a thin line and hurdle around cliffs. Having said that, Annie, you rock because you sound like you are personally motivated to do it too! I must admit, your description and pictures almost tempt me to try myself. Almost.

wow! I ache to be there. Everything is so fluffy and green here. there are huge green trees billowing above me and lush green grwoth everywhere- but i miss the rocks, the dimensions, the scape of Utah ( and Utah-ish) places. Love it !

Jake and Annie, what a great thing to do and the beauty is very similar to Utah. Glad you took the time to go. mom
