Neil Diamond and The Geography of Music

I heard the song “Heartlight” by Neil Diamond, the other day on the radio and I was immediately taken to the year 1984 at 4586 West 3650 South, West Valley City, Utah (where my family lived until I turned 8 in 1987). Over the years I have kept an unofficial list of songs that do this. The phenomenon is clear and distinct, some are stronger than others, but each one takes me there (give or take a few years I’m sure). My parents are responsible for some of them, but not most. Here is the list:

Sailing --- Christopher Cross
I Go Crazy --- Paul Davis
Dance with Me--Orleans
Round Round Get Around --- Beach Boys
Heartlight -- Neil Diamond
My Guy – Mary Wells
Break My Stride – Mathew Wilder
Sing Sing a Song – Carpenters
Sunshine on My Shoulders – John Denver
I Believe that Children are the Future – Mrs. Margene
That’s What Friends are For—Dionne Warwick
Wildfire – Michael Martin Murphey

You can look up any of these songs on YouTube (most are accompanied by those cheesy slideshows, but you can always minimize the screen). I am interested to see if anyone else (particularly my siblings) has a similar response, or if Neil Diamond is just really trying to tell me something…

Enjoy

Jake

i actually don't know if this is the name of the song but...
Saturday in the park - Chicago

Thriller- Michael Jackson

Material Girl - Madonna (tiffany's favorite song it was always playing when i would ride my bike to Brians)

Rock n Roll Fever - josh and jacob Callister...we made it up in the back yard.. i wonder if he remembers.

Iron Man - Black Sabbath.. all the weird older skater kids would be blasting this in the neighborhood. it made quite an impression. i thought they were scary..and THEY WERE!

Seriously, songs just take ya places!
As I read your list Jake I was couldn't help but smile.
I lost my first tooth while dancing to Round, Round... Beach boys--old house.
I just bought a Orleans CD solely for the song Dance With Me. I love that song, mostly because it always reminded me of a song on Labyrinth--I fell in love with that movie when it first came out (Old house days also).
Sailing and Wildfire still just really get me--I love them, and definitely sing them at the top of my lungs in the car when they come on, "She ran calling, 'Wildfire'...calling, "wi-i-i-i-i-i-ild-fi-ire'..."! Oh yeah!
The other songs are great, too.
Josh totally nailed the JUMP, mom's exercising days!
music is just awesome!

Totally that Break my stride song. I was only 4 when we moved, but I'll hear some songs on the soft rock radio stations and i'm right there in the kitchen watching mom wash the dishes while i'm under the table with my heman action figures.

I'd be interested to find out where each song transports you...
