Summer 1984 or 5: On a road trip through the national parks of Southern Utah with our cousins the Zaleskis The soundtrack: The Beach Boys. We had one of those zip up canvas cases that held about 12 cassettes (precursor to Case Logic). It was jam packed full of Beach Boys albums. They were the easy favorite of the Callister boys. We would all sing out loud with the songs. I remember being in the back and freaking out that Mom and Dad would take more than ten seconds to turn the cassette over. (This is because I was powerlessly stuffed into the back of the Jeep Cherokee with the luggage (this is ok because it actually wasn’t dangerous at all to be without a seat belt before 1985)….
ANY Beach Boys tune takes me to summer camping vacations with cousins… it just does.
I have had people ask me if there is something my family or parents did to make us all a little more musically inclined… although we did have lessons and things, I think the seed was planted on countless roadtrips, and at home with all of us singing our guts out together. Singing became like talking… what is there is to be self conscious about? The second singing out loud becomes uncool in my household is the day we are in trouble.

two things
first, i am convinced that if you are feeling down the fastest way to get happy is to sing along to some beach boys. maybe it is just that i personally associate them with good times. yet after a while their music could bring you back down. i mean how much scooping and adolescent sounding voices can you take.
second,
it is also safe to ride in a car without a seat belt or even any common sense if you are in idaho. we were there a couple weeks ago and eve ni was like, " sure, let tayson ride with his cousins in the back of the pick up to the potato field"
sometimes it is nice to pretend you are able to go back in time when life was ignorantly simpler.
I always think of road trips with the fam when I hear Beach Boys!! it always makes me feel so goood. I do agree however, I can get too much beach boy fun. But I very much enjoyed this post.. :)
