Losing a "Real Man"

Saw that Merlin Olsen passed away today after a long battle with cancer. Ok I was never an outspoken or overtly obvious Merlin Olsen fan, but as I reflect on this man, I notice that we share some connections and he was the type of guy that every young man (and old man) should want to be like. Merlin went to Utah State like me, and shared my love for Cache County. Merlin and I even met a few times (at Bear Lake while I was working there, and randomly enough in Newport Oregon at Annie and I's favorite little seafood dive).

Merlin seemed to be a straight shooter no matter what he did. And how great would it be to see athletes who behave like gentlemen and scholars in this day and age. Merlin set the standard for that when he played in the NFL in the 60s and 70s.

Last but not least, who will ever forget Merlin in Little House on the Prairie, how do you go from bustin heads on the field to Little House on the Prairie... only Merlin.

We'll miss you Merlin.

Jake

I never know what i am going to find on your blog. random posts that make me wonder-were we raised in the same house- are common. Love how you connect with people and find people interesting. can't explain it- but you do.

"I's" is not a real word. The possessive of "me" is MY. Are you a native speaker of English?

Merlin was awesome! how many rough football players, a member of the famed fearsome foursome, would become the FTD flower guy, a regular on little house on the prairie? i am thinking none......

A friend mentioned to me he'd passed and I didn't believe him until I was shown a news article confirming it. Olsen spoke at my commencement ceremony at USU...
