One night in December, 2002, the lives and influences of these three individuals crossed paths..... perhaps needless to say... it was a great moment.
During the Holiday season of 2002. I was helping my good friends the Dietleins out at their Theater in Utah (Hale Centre Theatre). It would be truer to say that they were helping me out, since I was being paid to make phone calls to maintain season ticket holders... Anyway, my friend Quinn comes in and says "Hey Thomas S. Monson (then 1st counselor in the First Presidency of the LDS church, now president and prophet) is coming to the show tonight (A Christmas Carol), they are going to feed him and want some entertainment" They wanted to know if we would sing silent night in German and then some other Christmas tune. Quinn's mom Sally suggested that we do John Denver's "Christmas for Cowboys", a song which Quinn and I had now sung many times and was a favorite of friends and family.
They had dinner and invited us in. We sang silent night, had some wonderful conversation about the church in Germany. President Monson shared some quick stories about the saints in Germany. Before we sang Christmas for Cowboys, I remember making a kind of apology for singing a "secular" tune. I'll never forget what he said... "well John Denver songs are like hymns"... The song went great.
Now... I'll leave it to each of you to determine whether he was speaking as a prophet that night, or simply as another John Denver fan.... This I know however... That was a great moment!

So did you sing for the line, "Thinking bout women and glasses of beer."?
Just curious.
Wrong song hun.... James dreams about women and glasses of beer... the worst John does is "pass the pipe around"

i remember you telling me that story a little while ago. that is pretty awesome! ( i wonder if Pres. Monson was using his prophetic insights to say something he knew you wanted to hear??!) j/k that is actually one of my favorite christmas songs as well!
oh whoops, my bad :)
I'm already laughing about your post and even more by Annie's comment. I'm going to forward this post along to my mom, she'll love it. I'm pretty certain she'll agree he was speaking as a prophet then. :)
Christmas for Cowboys, my all time fav John Denver song!
That's an awesome experience, I'd never heard the tale
Prophet. No doubt about it - Prophet speaking!
As a fellow JD lover....I have tears in my eyes. What a great story!
