Inch by Inch, Row by Row

Gonna make this garden grow...
all it takes is a rake and ho
and piece of fertile ground

We seem to think we have the necessary recipe for making food grow in our backyard. We have been talking about it quite a bit lately (well mostly Annie) I have been frightened because keeping the yard up is enough to take up most of my free time... But I must admit that once I got that one mule power tiller going, I started having a good time (this is of course well after I had removed the grass from our 12x12 garden). That is a process one should accomplish in his or her youth, because they would probably never recover otherwise. It was less fun.

Anyway, we have planted some string beans, tomatoes (several varieties), cucumbers, corn, cantelope, yellow squash, zuchini, strawberries and onions. Annie is pulling for the tomoatoes and I am hoping for fruit salad!!

We are just hoping for some good sunshine now. In typically due Oregon fashion, right after my family left (when it was about 95 degrees), the temperature went back down to about 55-65 and the rain came back. You can almost watch the plants growing when the sun shines.

Wish us luck!! This is our first garden!

Oh Boy, can i relate!! Deena really wants her garden this year so ... i too jacob spent a gruelling, arduous, and altogether lower back aching day digging up grass and putting in a garden. we are square-foot gardening (or at least trying) we will see how it goes!

Holy Cow... I am so impressed... speechless really. I think the Callister family has set a new agrarian standard in the Barlow family, well I guess you have to compete with Grandpa and the wild strawberries and raspberries....

I am so impressed and jealous of you guys!! I want a garden so badly but I have a sneaky feeling that I would become lazy and it wouldn't end well for the innocent seeds:( How did you know where to plant what and when? Did you plant lettuce? Did you have to put up a fence or chicken wire? I think that you have inspired me to plant one in our yard. I think it would be so rewarding to cook with ingredients that we grew ourselves.

Ps.. I promise and update on our blog is coming shortly! I have been such a slacker:(

Hey Annie and Jake!
Your garden looks awesome...when did you guys move into a house? I found your blog through Margaret's by the way.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi...looks like you guys are doing well in my favorite place in the world.

Oh and PS. I have never known anyone else who knows the bean game! Rock on!

Wow! I'm very impressed! I can't wait to have a garden again. Maybe you can come to Denver for a visit and help us get it started! I love reading your updates - you two might be the funniest people in the world!

Love you - Katie

Wow Jake, you've really taken the old "thrust in thy sickle with all thy might" to heart. Though I don't think the almighty will begrudge you too much for use a motorized tiller. I don't think I was endowed with the horticulture gene. Ours is the only house on the street with a brown lawn because we only turned the sprinklers on last week. Everyone else's yard is lush and green, and ours is barely hanging on. I did finally cut it though. However, that just exposed more brown spots that were hiding underneath the tall green ones. Oh well, it's a rental house anyway.
It's nice to know that Oregon weather is not too different than Utah weather. We too went from about 90 degree weather on the 19th of may to about 50 degree weather on the 21st. I am so ready for winter to be done!
Anywho, let me know if you are going to make your way back to the beehive state this summer, we'd love to have you and your wife over for dinner.

I am glad to finally see your green thumb, I always knew you had it in you. The cold has already taken one of our cucumber plants to plant heaven.
By the way if you get your USU alum magazine look at the last page and you will see a band by the name of lokalgrown shown there. But I dont recognize anyone in the picture. Any explinations on what happened to the real lokalgrown?
